BLACK LIVES MATTER
With recent events happening in America we are sharing places where you can help and donate for the cause. Not only do these issues happen in the US, they also happen on our home soil of Australia. Check out a few places you can help below:
Bridge The Gap Foundation – There's a 10 year gap in the average life expectancy between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians; health and education are one of the major contributors to this gap. BTG undertake research around medical, health and education challenges.
National Justice Project – a not-for-profit legal service advancing human rights by representing and giving voice to the vulnerable who would otherwise be unable to find legal representation. Much of their work is a direct challenge to governments and their unlawful action. They use the law and education to create change and represent clients in public interest litigation and educate people in vulnerable communities about their rights.
Community First Development – Work with First Nations communities and based on the principle of self-determination. Communities right around Australia invite CFD to create partnerships with them so that they can achieve great things for their communities. Projects are always determined and led by community which is super important.
Following the death of George Floyd and the protests across the USA, a number of fundraising drives have been set up to support Floyd’s family, bail out protestors who have been arrested and support the wider Black Lives Matter movement. Here are some US organisations that you can fund right now to support black people and help the fight against racism.
Black Lives Matter - the movement and our ongoing fight to end state-sanctioned violence, liberate Black people, and end white supremacy forever.
Black Vision Collective - Black Visions Collective (BLVC) believes in a future where all Black people have autonomy, safety is community-led, and we are in right relationship within our ecosystems.
Reclaim the Block - Reclaim the Block began in 2018 and organizes Minneapolis community and city council members to move money from the police department into other areas of the city’s budget that truly promote community health and safety. We believe health, safety and resiliency exist without police of any kind. We organize around policies that strengthen community-led safety initiatives and reduce reliance on police departments. We do not believe that increased regulation of or public engagement with the police will lead to safer communities, as community testimony and documented police conduct suggest otherwise.
Official George Floyd Memorial Fund - A fund to help cover George Floyd’s funeral and support his family as they move through court proceedings
NAACP Legal Defense Fund - The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. is America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. LDF also defends the gains and protections won over the past 75 years of civil rights struggle and works to improve the quality and diversity of judicial and executive appointments.
American Civil Liberties Union - The ACLU has been at the center of nearly every major civil liberties battle in the U.S. for over 100 years. This vital work depends on the support of ACLU members in all 50 states and beyond.
National Bail Fund Network - The National Bail Fund Network is made up of over sixty community bail and bond funds across the country. We regularly update this listing of community bail funds that are freeing people by paying bail/bond and are also fighting to abolish the money bail system and pretrial detention.
National Police Accountability Project - Police misconduct, including misconduct perpetrated by jail and prison personnel, continues to be one of the most serious violations of civil rights in the United States. With your donation, you help NPAP to work towards more law enforcement accountability.
Know Your Rights Camp - Our mission is to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders.
